Epoxy grout regrouting for leaking showers
Bottom line: Epoxy grout is a non-porous joint filler. We remove the existing cement grout from the shower and regrout with epoxy so water stops passing through the joints. The tiles stay on the wall and floor.
- Used when the leak is at the joints and junctions, not through a failed membrane.
- Cement grout is porous. Epoxy is impervious.
- Not a substitute for a floor rebuild if there is no fall to the waste.
What is epoxy grout?
Epoxy grout is a resin joint filler, not a cement mix. It does not absorb shower water the way sand-and-cement grout does, so it does not darken and break down in the same way. MasterSealed uses it to seal showers after the old grout has been cut out.
How does a regrout run?
- Inspect the joints, silicone, waste and the ceiling below.
- Remove the existing grout from the shower.
- Regrout with epoxy and reseal junctions so the area is watertight.
When epoxy regrout is the wrong tool
If tiles sound hollow, the floor holds water away from the waste, or the stain pattern says the membrane has failed, regrouting the surface will not fix the path under the tiles. That job is a shower floor retile.
